Making A Collective Decision

Something funny happened the other day during a team building presentation. We met a few people who requested our services for their employees. Before the start of the presentation, we were informed they weren’t happy with the previous company that conducted a team building session for them because the results “were not lasting”. When we asked them what they were looking for specifically, they replied, “team building”.
After the presentation, when we probed them for questions, they looked blankly at us and at each other. They also had differing views from each other and it got a little uncomfortable after awhile watching the little conflict that was going on. The thing is this. Before you can even decide that you want to conduct a team building session for your company, you must first come together with a collective thought and a focus in mind. Decisions for team building must not come from one person alone – it has to be the group agreeing in one voice about the most beneficial option.
Team building does not just start with the training provider. It must start with those who want it – only then can you be given exactly what you’re looking for and achieve continued sustainable results.

We can only help if the other person is certain on how they want to be helped. So wake up and decide.

Collective decision is not only to be practice in team building decision but also all decisions made in a company. So it will benefit the company as a whole and not only certain individual..

You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink - or so the saying goes. Maybe these kind of people should be drowned in it so they'll at least know they don't want to die and will ask for help.

Same with other business,if the client is clear enough to what they want, we'll provide our best services to them. If they're not clear enough keep on asking until they come out the decision.

its not a team building if it is just 1 person who decide things. "the is no "I" in TEAM"

I believe most people don't know what they want. If one cannot make decision about their own life, how can they make decision for others?

I think there's a big money in doing business of "I know what you want and what you should do with your life". Basically telling people what to do.

I like Ernie Chen's method, "Choose something you think you like and then focus on being good at that. Once you're good at it, that'll be definitely what you love and want to do". I think this is better than trying to look at the three or listen to your breathing to get some sign from the universe to tell you what is you should do with your life.

That's why I'm a fan of Ernie Chen.

When something needs to be achieved concerning collected effort in a organization or from a team, then discussions or meetings should be conducted. That it self is a teambuilding.

i totally agree. whe present our teambuilding proposal, committe members always look for what they want and not what the team wants. Or the committee members "pakat" on what they want to have fun and not according to the company objectives...

sad...sad....

decision made, feedback for improvement is always important.

most of the time, people will use personal emotions to feedback on the decision made. either they give you nonsence feedback or no feedback towards the desicion made.

i guess because of this, people always do not volunteer to make decision.

Communication is the key factor for an organization success. Always communicate with your team and never assume everyone know already.

true enough. A lot of people, do not know what they want, from beginning to the end of the conversation will only include this line :"You know it better, we leave all to you"

A fruitful outcome require both ways communication and idea sharing ... sigh...

Baqi, good article. Many companies out there always looking for so-called long lasting "teambuilding". But they are not aware, TOGETHER - we can achieve the more.

If superior can't make collective decision, how about the subordinates? They'll be more confuse as they don't have a clear direction from the superior.

if superior can't make collective decision, the subordinates need to have solutions and decision to inform superior. never wait.

if people don't provide us the direction, we look for the directions ourselves. act fast.

This will train ourselves to make decision and train ourselves to take on a bigger role in whatever we do. Good “exam” to ourselves during the real project execution, don’t you think so??

Collective decision portrays the unity in a organization among their staff or peers. If the decision only comes from one person in the organization, then there will definite chaos and this will cause the organization to be unstable.

This group of people, they just don't know what they really need and we cannot help them if they don't change their attitude. So DECIDE NOW, or you will forever stuck.
